マイクロソフトはもともと「ルールブレイカー」だった。
PCがまだコンピューターの専門家からはおもちゃとしか見なされなかったときも、その上で表計算ソフトや文書作成を実現させ、PC市場を作り出した。
Windowsがワークステーションの代わりになどになるかと、まだ多くの人が懐疑的だったときも、ワークステーションの上でしか提供されていなかった多くのアプリケーションを移植して、ワークステーション市場を駆逐した。
Windowsでエンタープライズ処理など無理と考える人が多かったが、結局、多くの顧客をエンタープライズ市場においても得ることに成功した。
ミッションクリティカル領域やHPC市場など、既存の市場を破壊することで、新たなルールを作り出す。それがマイクロソフトだった。
それがどうもクラウドコンピューティングに関しては歯切れが悪い。
既存顧客の資産を守りつつクラウドへ移行する。なんともユーザーに優しい戦略だ。競合に打ち勝ち、新たな市場を創成することをDNAとしてきたマイクロソフトが「緩やかな移行」を打ち出している。つまり、マイクロソフトも守りに入っているということだ。勘違いしてもらっては困るが、これは必ずしも悪いことではない。
